A Young Mom’s Practical tips on Vacationing

My hubby is a workaholic. We have an agreement before we got married that he will be fending for us while I will take care of the house and the kids. It seems to me like a very good arrangement –he brings home the bacon, I cook it, and we eat it together, so to speak. In the same manner, whenever we plan for a well deserved vacation, he takes care of the funds and I get to plan our vacation itineraries. Here’s my vacation planning checklist, you might learn something from this practical tips, which by the way I got from my mom too:

Vacation Dates. Choose your schedule carefully. Look at the husbands’ calendar lest your vacation will be interrupted because he needs to get back home early and attend something in the office. When schedules are made in advance and carefully chosen, it is most likely that people who know that you are not around in those days can make the necessary adjustments. Inform also any other people, where and when necessary, about your schedule and how you can be reached in cases of urgent matters.

Destination. Choose your destination/s carefully too. If you are planning of getting out of the country, it pays to do a little browsing about the country of your choice. Do a little reading about its basic geography, language, culture, and customs. See where your embassy is located so that you can easily reach them in cases of needs. If you are bringing the kids, ask them whether they will be enjoying bathing under the sun in a gorgeous beach resort somewhere in the Caribbean or would prefer wilderness experience in a reservation park.

Transportation and Accommodations. Find a value-fared plane or car rental when needed. Book for a hotel or a vacation rental in advance. Choose what suit your needs and your budget. Compare prices and amenities so that you will have the best value accommodation. You don’t want to ruin your vacation because the hotel does not have a pool will ya?

Travel Documents. Prepare all the required travel documents, e.g., passports (with visa when required), health and medical insurance cards, international driver’s license, green cards, doctor's prescription letter, and credit cards, and other papers that you need to bring. Make a check list on this. Also, know the entry and exit requirements for the country you are about to visit and bring the required documents. Don’t forget your plane tickets, will ya.

Baggage. Make a checklist of the necessary things that you need to carry. Underscore the word necessary. Why? For one, it is expensive to pay for extra baggage. Secondly, too many things is cumbersome and is not convenient for you if you are traveling. Prepare a checklist and prioritize. Don't forget any medications that any member of your family might need.

There you go, my practical tips for an unforgettable vacation. I hope you learn something. If I missed out something, please feel free to add or suggest.
